St. Matthew's Lutheran Church -- Staff

The Reverend Robert L. Helton, Jr., Pastor

Ordained and serving actively as a pastor in the ELCA for over thirty years Pastor Bob brings to St, Matthew’s much experience and a wealth of knowledge for programming and living out the Gospel. He previously served three congregations as either pastor or associate pastor and served many “worshipping communities as an Army Chaplain throughout the world.

Pastor Bob is married to Lynn (Jones) Helton, and they have one grown daughter, Amanda who lives and works in Charleston, SC for the South Carolina Aquarium. Bob and Lynn live happily on Lake Murray with their dog Katie.

When asked what is important to him Pastor Bob replied, “I believe that God alone is the giver, and sustainer of life and we are here by the grace of God. The two most important things in our Christian life are forgiveness and restoration. God’s love cannot be broken.

Our cross-oriented theology speaks to the frustrations and troubles we face each day and it offers us hope. Living out that hope means that God calls us every day to share God's love with everyone we meet.”

Mrs. Betty Jo McCartha, Organist - Choir Director

Betty Jo has been involved in church music for over 57 years serving as pianist, organist, and choir director for various churches. She assumed the position of Organist - Choir Director at St. Matthew's in January 1990.

Music and singing are important in our Lutheran worship and we encourage everyone to use their musical talents by singing or playing instruments in our services.

The Children's Choir rehearses on Wednesday at 7:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Anthems are sung twice monthly during the worship service, and they presented a mini Christmas musical last December during the Sunday School hour and fellowship time.

The Senior Choir rehearses on Wednesday at 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, and lead the worship services through the year singing traditional and contemporary songs. The highlight of the church year is the annual cantata presented on the Sunday before Christmas.

An invitation is extended to all to join our music program and "Make a joyful noise to the Lord."
